In a clip posted to TikTok by an account called Two Red Retrievers on July 1, a dog can be seen desperately trying to get his ball after it rolled under a wooden fence.
The golden retriever has his nose wedged between the planks of the fence, and is looking at the tennis ball with longing.
Text overlaying the footage reads: "This would be incredibly sad... if the gate wasn't open."
The camera then pans across to show that the dog is lying right next to a wide open gate.
Set to "My Heart Will Go On," the theme song from Titanic, the clip is both heartbreaking and extremely funny.
Two Red Retrievers has captioned the video: "Life Lesson: always see the bigger picture. #goldenretriever."
The clip has gone viral online, having so far been viewed a whopping 8.1 million times and surpassed 1.2 million likes.
Many people took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the pooch's perplexing actions.

One TikTok user, Mons_insta, wrote: "Not the brightest bulb in the pack I see."
Another person, Andy, revealed: "My dad sent this saying 'this is your dog'... He's not wrong."
Saucy Tacos joked: "This is the best representation of my life."
Kim added: "My dog has a playpen (he cannot be trusted alone) and first time, I had to show him how to get out because I called him and he couldn't find the door."
Laurie Lyons Smith took the view that the dog knew about the opening, writing: "What a good girl... she knows she is not supposed to go out the gate...deserves extra treats."
An account by the name of User305884448593 jokingly wrote: "Don't you know when you play ball with your dog the human is supposed to do the fetching? She's just waiting."
Kim Roo commented: "Yeah right there with you bud, I sometimes focus on the problem way too much... perspective."
To this, Two Red Retrievers replied: "That is exactly right."
Another golden retriever video which might make you smile, is a clip posted to TikTok which shows a dog named Zoey sat between two Huskies on a car journey.
Both Huskies are howling, not in unison, as music plays softly in the background.
The footage is made all the more humorous by Zoey's vacant look as she pants away, ignoring her very disruptive companions.
The video, shared by Chris Boudens on June 20, has since been viewed 12.1 million times.
