Some of the most impressive members of the police force have four paws and wet noses.

And the Tactical Dog Unit at Greater Manchester Police have been highlighting the amazing work their police dogs do whilst on shift.

The dedicated dogs are trained to assist officers in searching for drugs and explosives, finding missing people, sniffing out evidence and catching criminals.

This month, the team have discovered cannabis farms, Class A drugs, knives and lock snapping kits. One dog found an offender breaking into a church, and for others, just the presence of a police dog is enough to make a suspect surrender.

Here are 11 times these amazing dogs saved the day this month, as reported on the GMP Tactical Dog Unit Twitter account.

PD Blitz

PD Blitz was able to recover a ‘large quantity of Class A’ drugs after a lengthy police pursuit in Rochdale.

The canine certainly lived up to his name and was able to stop one of the fleeing occupants from escaping.

PD Tommy

Following a suspected kidnapping, PD Tommy and officers from the Bolton area were able to detain two fleeing suspects. With two down and one to go, Timmy was able to find the third suspect hiding under a trampoline.

GMP Tactical Dog Unit joked: “We're sure Tommy made him jump!”

PD Mel

After a busy shift looking after world leaders at the G7 Summit, PD Mel returned to Gorton where she was able to track down and detain the driver of a stolen vehicle. The offender was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

PD Yoda

PD Yoda didn't need any Jedi mind games on his job in Salford - the nose knows! PD Yoda used the force of his snooter to locate an offender who was arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs and driving offences.

PD Stanley

Three suspects attempted to flee a stolen vehicle in Rochdale, but PD Stanley made light work of catching them. The GMP Tactical Dog Unit said: “This PD Showed excellent Stan-ima detaining three males from a stolen vehicle in Rochdale.”

PD Stanley isn’t one to rest, and was also able to put his skills to great use to track down someone hiding in the undergrowth.

The team had pursued a suspected stolen vehicle when the offender fled before being arrested for various offences. Out-Stan-ding work from one of the force's newest recruits!

PD Will

Over in Hyde, a stolen car was crashed during a police chase, and PD Will was on hand to track down one of the offenders hiding in some long grass. He’s pictured above having a well deserved rest.

PD Flash

PD Flash doesn’t miss a trick, and detained a fleeing offender who was in possession of a large hunting knife and a lock snapping kit.

PD’s Ted and Dutch

Working the same shift as Flash, PD’s Ted and Dutch detained three offenders for catalytic converter thefts, and Dutch also discovered a burglar breaking into a church.

PD Eddie

There was simply no escaping PD Eddie when, during a burglary where the occupant had been assaulted, the offender fled back into the property and was caught by the dog. GMP said the offender was also in possession of a hammer.

As it transpired, the premises was in fact a cannabis farm.

PD Crank

PD Crank found the driver of a stolen Ford Fiesta hiding in some bushes. Actually, the due to the sheer noise the pooch was making. Top work, Crank!
