Associated Humane Societies is based out of Lacey/the Popcorn Park Zoo. They started donating the bulletproof vests to working police dogs in June of 1998, in honor of a police K9 named Solo. Solo was a three-year-old German Shepherd that had an exceptional record of locating many missing persons and apprehending several criminal suspects.

Sadly, he was shot and killed in the line of duty in Asbury Park on that date.

"We established our fund and vowed to protect as many working K-9s as possible with the help of those that contribute," said Associated Humane CEO Jerry Rosenthal last Thursday, outside the Middletown Township building. "Cap was all smiles and tail wags when presented with his new vest and we'd like to wish Cap and his partner, Officer Greenwood, the best of luck and safe days ahead in the future."

To donate toward the AHS Vested Interest Fund, go to www.ahscares.org.

Since 1998, they have graciously donated more than 1,000 bullet-proof vests to police dogs in New Jersey and throughout the nation.

If you know a police canine that needs a bulletproof vest, email Mobile Unit Coordinator Pam Parisio at pparisio@ahsppz.org at Associated Humane Societies.
