The brick facade that currently covers a downtown Cincinnati building is coming down.Under the red brick wall, which 3CDC said was likely constructed in the 1950s, is a 19th-century masterpiece. As it turns out, the building is actually two. "One of the buildings was actually designed by the renowned architect Samuel Hannaford. And over the years it was a series of department stores, it was a Kroger in the 60s," Joe Rudemiller said. 3CDC provided sister station WLWT with a rough timeline of the building's history: 1887-1891: Building was constructed during this time; 6 stories, brick structure1900: Mitchell Furniture Store1936-1949: Newberry Co.1951: Building was renovated with a new façade, removing the fifth and sixth stories for Butler Brothers Department Store1955: Shott’s Department Store1957: Friedman Furniture1960: Kroger store opens1969: Kroger store closesMost recently, The Chong Inc. utilized the building. "The proprietor decided in early 2020 that he wanted to retire and reached out to us. So we agreed to buy the building from him last June," Rudemiller said.The brick removal is expected to take four to six weeks, according to Rudemiller. Plans remain unknown at this point. "We actually don't have any firm plans for the building. It could be... likely to be some street-level retail space. It could be residential or an office space above," he said. Its location on the 600 block of Race in the Central Business District in Cincinnati excites 3CDC as well. "This area of town we feel like has been a little sleepy, but is really prime to come back and have a lot of vibrancy and so we're really excited to see where this building fits into all of that and we think that it's going to add some positive energy to that area," said Rudemiller.
