The animal was spotted by a group of pedestrians on Monday when it was standing on the surface of a frozen lake in sub-zero temperatures in Chongqing, south-western China.

Mr Liu, who captured some of the footage, told reporters: 'The ice couldn't hold its weight and [the dog] fell into the water.'

As the passers-by rushed to the stray's rescue, three of the men decided to form a human chain to free the animal.

In the video, they can be seen standing side by side while holding each other's hands as they approached the trapped animal.

One of them slowly walked down the snow-covered slope before squatting down to reach for the stray with its body soaked in the freezing water.

Last month, a pet Husky was rescued by Chinese firefighters in Beijing after it got stuck in the middle of a half-frozen lake at a park.

The canine accidentally fell into the freezing water while being walked by its pet owner when the temperature dropped to minus eight degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Chinese capital.

Footage shows the helpless animal clinging onto the ice edge before being pulled to safety by officers with a rope attached to a life buoy.
