A pet poodle that went missing three years ago has turned up just in time for Christmas.

Milo's owner burst into tears when she first heard the news, the adorable pup had been located in the Queensland city of Cairns - 800 kilometres away from where he had vanished.

Lauren Preece had been living in Cairns but sent her beloved dog to the Far North town of Weipa to live with her parents when she landed a job in Canada in 2017.

But a month after she left, Milo had gone missing in the middle of crocodile country and the family feared the worst.

'We thought a dingo might have taken him too because he's just a tiny little puppy really,' Ms Preece told 7News.

Although Milo was collared and micro-chipped, they were not able to locate him despite repeated efforts.

But out of the blue came a phone call from the Balaclava Veterinary Surgery.

They told Ms Preece that Milo had been located in the outer suburbs of Cairns.

'I was absolutely shocked. I did not believe what was happening,' she said.

'As soon as I hung up, I just cried. I was just so happy.'

How the brave dog managed to make it back to Cairns battling wild predators and busy roads remains a mystery, but Ms Preece is putting it down to a Christmas miracle.

Although Milo is in a 'bit of a bad condition' after his epic adventure, vet staff said he should be back to full health very soon.
