A spaniel stuck in the mud of the River Nith was rescued by the Coastguard this week.

Little Rory got into trouble near Kingholm Quay on Monday morning and was rescued by the Annan Coastguard team with help from the Portling and Belfast units.

Fortunately for Rory, the tide was low but he was still up to his chest in the cold water for two hours until the crews appeared.

His owner had initially tried to rescue him but decided to call the emergency services.

Members of the Coastguard used specialist equipment to float out to the stranded pooch before removing him from the mud and bringing him back to dry land.

He was met by his owner without any injuries. He was taken home for a warm bath to recover from the ordeal and is doing well.

Stewart Bryden, senior coastal operations officer at Annan, said: “His owner tried to get him out but realised the sand was a bit too soft and came away and gave us a call. There were other people looking and trying to help but they called us.

“Within about 15 minutes of us arriving we had him out.

“The members of the public did the correct thing here and dialed 999.

“Rory was well mannered and cooperated which isn’t always the case with animals.

“His owner was very thankful as were other members of the public who were watching.

“It could’ve been different if the tide was there but luckily this story has a happy ending.

“If anyone is in danger near the sea, cliffs or mud dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
