UPDATE: A York County couple's service dog, who ran away Thursday morning during the chaotic moments when they escaped their burning home, has been found.
The Great Dane named Caleb was reunited with his owners Thursday afternoon.
The fire happened around 6:15 a.m. on the 1500 block of Jacobs Mill Road in a rural area of Heidelberg Township, which is near Hanover.
Dog has been with family for years
Bill and Pat Miller say Caleb has been with the family for years and assists Pat, who has poor eyesight.
"He is man's best friend and would love the death out of you," said Bill.
Dozens of people, including WGAL viewers, were looking for the dog after he ran away. He was spotted several times before being found about a half-mile away from the fire scene.
Pat Miller said she's thankful to the volunteers who helped to search for Caleb.
The couple was able to get their six other dogs they were caring for out of the house. A guinea pig was killed in the fire.
House destroyed
Bill Miller said when he came downstairs this morning as he usually does, he saw fire. He said there was no time to think and they just had to get out.
Half of the home collapsed in the fire. The house is a total loss.
The couple was very shaken up, but they were not injured.
There's no word yet on what caused the fire.
