A caring roofer has rescued a cat that got stuck in a tree on St Peter's Avenue in Cleethorpes

An adventurous black cat got itself into a spot of bother this afternoon, after it climbed a tree on St Peter's Avenue and then realised that it could not get back down.

It was stuck about 30 feet up the tree and appeared to be in distress and wanted to come down. It is believed that the cat was less than a year old.

The cat was first noticed by Marie and Paul Walker from Reemas Salon on the North Promenade, who heard loud meows coming from the tree outside Costa Coffee, and looked up and noticed that there was stranded kitty.

At first, people phoned the fire brigade to see if they would be able to help bring the cat down, but they reportedly wouldn't come to the incident.

Luckily though, kind-hearted roofer Jason Wilkins, of Wilkins Roofing, was in the area and after getting a phone call from Paul Walker, he came to the animal's rescue.

He simply got his ladder, placed it against the side of the tree, climbed up and saved the cat, although it apparently tried to jump out of his hands as he was bringing it down safely.

Paul said: "My missus was on the Avenue and she heard these loud meows coming from the tree. She looked up and saw this cat stuck up there and thought it sounded like it was quite distressed and wanted to come down.

"It was stuck a fair bit up the tree, 30 feet or so, so it wasn't easy for the cat to come down.

"At first we rang the fire brigade to see if they would be able to come down and rescue it, but they explained that it would not be as simple as that and could take quite some time.

"So I rang my friend Jason, who is a roofer, and luckily he was in the area and he has these massive ladders that would easily reach up and get it.

"As soon as he reached the cat, it ran over straight into his arms, which I guess showed that the cat really wanted to come down, but it was very sleepy once it did.

"I then took the cat to the vet and its owner has now been traced and hopefully this will have a very happy conclusion and they are reunited."
