14th of January, 2020 – Humane Society International conducts search and rescue for fire affected wildlife on Kangaroo Island in Australia. This site has been dubbed as ‘hell’ – forest area near the Flinders Chase National Park, at the end of the Western Highway, where many lives were lost during the fire – and now as surviving animals struggle to find food and water. HSI Disaster Operations head Kelly Donithan carefully gathers up a severely dehydrated male koala, and then drip feeds him water on the way to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park triage for assessment and treatment.
