Why it’s important to adopt and not shop – adoption tips from the SPCA

A simple explanation of how the adoption process works and why it's important.

Did you ever wonder why the SPCA insists on inspecting the prospective new home before placing an adopted animal there? The society has to ensure that all adopted animals go to loving, safe and caring homes.

Procedure for adopting pets:

“The SPCA has copious amounts of abandoned animals in the kennels, waiting to be adopted and loved,” says Tshwane SPCA spokesperson Elsa Daniels.

“An adoption fee is charged to cover adoption expenses. The adoption fee for dogs are R748.00, puppies R889.00, cats R546.00 and kittens R889.00.”

Please take note of the following important aspects, when considering adopting a pet:

According to the Tshwane metro municipal bylaws, only three dogs are allowed per household. Should you already have three or more dogs, the SPCA will not allow you to adopt more.

At the time you decide to adopt a pet, please ensure that the rest of the family is in agreement, especially smaller children – they also have to come to the SPCA to meet with the new pet, before adoption.

Should you stay in a complex, a letter of approval is required from the body corporate before the process can start.

At the time you visit the SPCA, bring your other dogs along to see how they get along with each other.

It is SPCA policy that every animal that is adopted, should be sterilised or neutered, dewormed and microchipped – for lifelong identification. It is also advisable to add a collar and nametag, should your pet get lost.

Pre-home inspections:

SPCA personnel are required to do a pre-home inspection to ensure the safety of the animal that will be adopted. No pet will be allowed to be adopted if the property is not properly enclosed or fenced.

The SPCA will also look for adequate shelter, water and food supply during the pre-home inspection, and asses the general environment.

Post-home inspections:

After roughly six to eight weeks into the adoption, SPCA inspectors will visit the home to ensure that the pet had adapted well into the new environment.
