The pet business will have to rely on rescue dogs and similar animals under a California law that begins in 2019.The law bans pet stores from selling a dog, cat or rabbit in a pet store unless it was obtained from a public animal control agency or shelter, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals shelter, humane society shelter or rescue group.The Los Angeles Times previously reported California will be the first state to require pet stores to sell rescue animals.According to the new law, approved in 2017, pet store operators can face a civil penalty of $500 for each banned animal that's up for sale.
